What is the difference between philosophy and education

The philosophy of education began with Plato when he discussed in "The Republic" the education of warriors and philosopher-kings.

Plato believed that the education of warriors should instill knowledge, whereas the education of philosopher-kings should identify those with the capacity for philosophizing and refine and strengthen their character. Plato, a student of Socrates, developed the Socratic method of teaching based on his belief that critical thinking is enhanced during discussion as original questions are challenged and revised.

It may or may not incorporate into a philosophy of beliefs that seek to understand. Theories are based on observations and can refer to a hypothesis or set of hypotheses. They can be studied, tested, described and used to predict behavior and provide a basis for action. For instance, the theory that women make better kindergarten teachers could be tested as part of a theory of education, a theory of gender or a theory of culture.

According to Professor D. According to J. Education can be called as the dynamic side of philosophy because philosophy is wisdom; education transmits that wisdom from one generation to the other. Education is the application of the fundamental principles of philosophy.

Philosophy gives ideals, values and principles. Education works out those ideals, values and principles. Education without philosophy is like a tourist who knows the name of the place where he wishes to go but does not know how to find the place. The existence of education is due to philosophy and in the same way the existence of philosophy is due to education.

When we define education as the modification of behaviour, the direction in which, modification to be carried out is determined by philosophy. The problem is in which direction this change should be carried out and what should be the standards and values, to strive for. Philosophy, thus, gives direction to education. The function of philosophy is to seek relational approach to any phenomenon. Education is the processes by which the findings made by any philosopher can be propagated to the next generation.

This can be of the society, of the nature of people, of knowledge or even of the very concept of the universe. Philosophy consists of sub-disciplines such as metaphysics , epistemology , ethics , politics and also esthetics.

Philosophy is often categorized as Western philosophy and Eastern philosophy. Western philosophy dates back to the sixth century in Greece. Thales of Miletus is often considered as the first philosopher. The development of philosophy from this point rapidly increased during the fifth century with the ideas of Socrates and Plato. The development of ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, and political philosophy occurred during this period.

It was in the seventeenth century along with the advances in science and technology that modern philosophy was created. This was considered the age of enlightenment and broke away from the existing system of beliefs that was dominated by the religion towards a more rational empiricist path. Education, on the other hand, is more focused on the transmission of knowledge to the younger generations rather than questioning the laws of existence, reality, etc.

When speaking of education, it is often believed that education performs two functions, namely conservative function and the creative function.
