Why peyton manning chose denver
In Denver, Manning will be given full control of the offense as opposed to if he went to San Francisco where head coach Jim Harbaugh is the man in charge. That is most likely the highest offer Manning was given, and we all know money is the one thing professional athletes love even more than winning. The final possibility and one that is entirely likely is that Manning was scared. He knew that if he joined the 49ers, expectations would have been astronomical.
If Manning was unable to win a ring with the team he would be viewed as a choke and a failure. At this stage of his career, Manning might not have wanted to deal with those expectations and may have been content putting up big numbers in Denver for an average team.
If any of these reasons are true than I have lost all respect for Peyton Manning. I have always viewed Manning as someone who cares only about winning even though on many occasions he has come up short when it matters most. He was given a rare chance at the end of his career to hand pick a team to join and knowing that his NFL life is winding down, you can assume he would try and win another championship. In his conversation with Jessica Smetana, former SI writer Peter King revisited his reporting from that story, which culminated in an article that ran in the April 2, issue.
Now just a bit over eight years since that story, King recalled that one of the biggest factors in Manning's decision was Pat Bowlen's track record. But he was there at the press conference announcing Manning, and Bowlen was a big reason why Manning wanted to go because Manning knew he just looked at Denver's history and they were never bad. They were they were always a contending team. And I think that was really important to him, that they would spend the money and do what they had to do to try to be a contender.
SI senior reporter Albert Breer, who covered Manning's decision for NFL Network at the time, led off his mailbag with his recollection of it and why it wasn't as clear-cut a decision as people may think. Of the five selections, only one writer selected a game from Manning's Broncos tenure: his seven-touchdown game vs.
That leaves second-round pick Lock as the wild card. If he proves to be legit, the Broncos are going to surprise in a big way. I get to coach [son] Marshall's flag football team, I went to a doubleheader softball game to see [daughter] Mosley play.
I'm just taking everything on a one year at a time basis, next year who knows how I'll feel. But I'll always be a part of the Broncos, I'll say that.
