Format Challenges To create exciting, high-level play experiences across a variety of formats, the Magic Online team hosts a variety of regularly scheduled Challenge Events! Tip : If you want to use a deck not on this list, you can import it from your computer with the Import a Decklist button.
Each row in that section represents a match that meets the filter requirements you have selected. Click the Join Game button to open the Choose your Deck dialog, select the deck you want to play with, and get started!
Challenge a Player If you want to play against a specific friend, you can directly challenge that player to a game. Select any additional filters to apply to your game: Format : You can choose a format for your game before selecting a deck.
Skill Level : You can choose to define your game with this filter. It has no effect on game play. By default, this is set to Just for Fun , but you can change it if you like. Watchers Allowed : You can choose to permit watchers for your game. Comments can be entered in the comments box to further define your game. Click the "OK" button to send the challenge. Start a Solitaire Game You can test a deck without battling another player.
Select Solitaire from the Players filter. Other filters have no effect on solitaire games. Click either the Play or Host a New Match button to begin your solitaire game. Playing the Game This section will help explain some basic information about the Magic Online interface, not the rules of Magic. Play Lands Click a land card in your hand to play it. Activate Mana Abilities If a permanent such as a land you control has a mana ability, you can click it to tap it for mana.
Unused mana in your pool is displayed in the lower-left corner of the battlefield. Cast Spells All cards that can be cast at the current moment of the game, whether they are in your hand or in another zone, will appear highlighted. Left-click a highlighted nonland card to cast it. If the card you are casting requires mana to cast beyond what is already in your mana pool, you will receive a message stating how much mana is required and the opportunity to activate mana abilities to help pay for it.
Tip : Spells that cost no mana open a menu with a Cast option to prevent you from accidentally casting the spell at the wrong time with an errant mouse click. Follow the instructions in any additional prompts, such as choosing targets. Once you finish casting the spell, it will move to the stack. This is represented in Magic Online by a temporary window on the battlefield.
Paying Alternate and Additional Costs If a spell or ability has alternate or optional additional costs, these will generally be indicated by a menu that opens when you click the card. In addition, there are Constructed events, which require you to build a deck from cards in your collection and battle against other players who have done the same, or Limited events Draft or Sealed Deck , where each player is provided a pool of cards from which to build a deck.
The most common options to enter these events are a combination of Event Tickets and Booster Packs which can be purchased in the Store or obtained via trade from other players , Event Tickets alone, or some number of Play Points untradeable items that can only be earned by doing well in events. You will only be able to select entry options for which you have all the requisite product.
Some high-level events also offer invitations to the Pro Tour. Some events are labeled as Phantom — they allow you to enjoy a play experience with the cards, but those cards are not added to your collection at the end of the event.
Prizes for Schedules Events and Queues are awarded by the system when the event is fully complete after the playoff, if applicable. Prizes for Leagues are awarded at the end of each stage for multi-stage Leagues and at the end of the League course. Please review the Magic Online Prize Eligibility information for details.
Hover your cursor over the League you would like to enter, then click the Details button on the right side of the screen — this opens the League Details window. Most Leagues contain a single stage of matches.
However, the Friendly Sealed League contains three stages of competition — after each stage, you can optionally add a booster to your Sealed pool to allow new options in deckbuilding. While Leagues can last weeks or even months, they will eventually come to an end when new releases arrive. The amount of time available to finish a League course is found in two places: directly above the Join League button as well as on the left side of the League Details window.
The deadline to begin a new course of a League is shown under League Closes , and no new matches can begin after the League Ends time. Before you join a league, make sure you have enough time to finish the matches in your League course. Players who finish their course without a loss earn a trophy and are displayed in the League Champions section. You can filter these results for players on your buddy list or in your clan, or search for specific players in the search bar to the left of the leaderboard.
Clicking the Undefeated Decks button links you to a sampling of undefeated decklists from Competitive Constructed Leagues and high-level tournaments.
For Constructed Leagues, ensure your deck in its proper configuration main deck, sideboard and quantities in the Collection scene before clicking Join League. No adjustments are permitted to the contents of the deck once the League begins. Tip : Cards that you are using in the deck of an active event are locked in your Collection and cannot be traded until the League course completes.
In addition, we wanted to release Ikoria Commander cards simultaneously with the main set, but as we worked through the challenges of Ikoria , it became clear that delivering 71 additional cards at the same time as the main set was impossible, so we decided to delay the Commander portion of the release.
We know that players are excited for the Commander cards, so we'll release as much of it as possible at the end of May. We're targeting the most exciting cards first, followed by everything that is easy cards that mostly just work , followed by the rest. This means you can expect to see many of the rares and mythic rares, but it is possible that we are not able to release every card at the end of May. Those that are missed will be targeted for a later release as time allows.
Secret Lair Drop Series drops are awesome releases designed to inspire and delight all sorts of players. We were exited to participate in the launch of Secret Lair at the end of last year and look forward to participating in future releases as well.
One of the exciting elements about Secret Lair drops is how quickly they can be delivered to players, sometimes seemingly out of the blue. Unfortunately for Magic Online and how we build cards, we often need more lead time and structure for our releases than is available for some of the surprise Secret Lair drops.
MTGO development batches blocks of cards, typically clustered around a set release, which allows us to consolidate some of the work and provides scale efficiencies.
One of the drawbacks of this process is that we typically don't have the ability to insert surprise drops off-schedule, particularly when we're dealing with a set like Ikoria. That said, we love Secret Lair and are taking the following steps moving forward. When the schedules align, we'll participate in Secret Lair releases with codes that allow Secret Lair purchasers to add the cards to the their MTGO collection.
This will be similar to how we participated in the December drops. Where our schedules don't align, we will bring select Secret Lair cards to Magic Online after the fact. We'll likely focus on drops that are not tied to a specific timing, so you're more likely to see the Secret Lair : Stargazing cards than you are the Secret Lair : Year of the Rat cards, but we'll try to be as flexible as possible, and if there is a particular drop you'd like to see, let us know at MagicOnlineFeedback wizards.
When we go down this path, we'll explore different ways to deliver the cards, from Treasure Chests to codes to special events, so keep an eye out for future announcements.
At the end of , we announced a major overhaul to our Premier Play system, moving from an annual model to a seasonal model. The end of the first season is rapidly approaching, with the last set of Showcase Challenges on April 11 and April While we're happy with where Season 1 is directionally, we think there are a few places where we can improve.
First, we're taking data from Season 1 and using it to evolve our Preliminary schedule. We'll be reviewing schedules and format participation to make adjustments, and it is likely underperforming formats will be moved around or converted to a format that is performing better.
Our goal with the changes is to ensure that players can be confident that a scheduled event they join won't be cancelled and will start on time. The updated schedule, along with the details of the changes below, will be on the Premier Play details page soon. Next, were increasing the QPs players can earn in most leagues. For Season 1, we erred on the side of caution to ensure that Premier Events did not get too large.
While we know that the major events will be long, we prefer them to be closer to 8 rounds than 10, and we've stayed clear of that round mark so far.
